最近、ハバナにお気に入りの場所がひとつ増えた。
昨年末にできたシガーバー「Libertador Havana」。
一日中、人と車の往来でにぎやかなハバナの目抜き通り「23通り」から角を曲がってすぐなのに、このあたりだけは喧騒から切り離され、不思議なほど静かで穏やかな空間だ。
シガーバーといっても、ちょっと灯りを暗くして高級葉巻を重厚な革張りのソファで…という入るだけで緊張しそうな場所ではなく、誰でも気軽にちょっとリラックスして一服したいな、というときにフラッと立ち寄れる気楽さが心地よい場所です。
最近はキューバ葉巻もどんどん値上がりして怖いくらいの値段（前から怖かったけど）になっているけれど、ここでは公式ショップで売られているものと変わらない上質の葉巻が格安で楽しめる。違いはリングが巻かれてないことくらい。
テラス席で夕方の心地よい風に吹かれながら友人たちと飲み物片手に談笑し、葉巻ソムリエのピーテルに今日のおすすめの葉巻を尋ねる。
陽気なピーテルとの会話もまた楽しい。初めて葉巻に挑戦してみたい人には彼が葉巻の構造から、良い品の見分け方、火のつけ方、ふかし方、相性のいい飲み物や食べ物のおすすめまでレクチャーしてくれる。
奥のソファでゆったりしているとオーナーのかわいがっている犬さんが膝の上にのってきてくれるのもまたうれしい。
テラス奥の天井の高い建物に入ると、アンティークショップとブティックが併設されており、キューバの歴史を感じさせる古いグッズやグラス、お洒落なポスターやアクセサリー、葉巻に関する品々などが山積みとなっているので、吸いかけの葉巻をいったん置いて、この宝の山であれこれ品定めするのも楽しみのひとつ。
海外からの観光客が目指す旧市街から離れており、キューバの日常が展開される普通の街の中にあるというのも、知っている人だけが楽しめる隠れ家的な味わいがあり、そこもまた気に入っている。
日本から友人が来てくれた時にはこんな面白い場所もあるよ！とおすすめしたい店のひとつです。
Lately, I’ve found a new favorite spot in Havana.
It’s a cigar bar called “Libertador Havana,” which opened at the end of last year.
Even though it’s just around the corner from the lively, bustling “23rd Street” one of Havana’s busiest main roads this little area feels completely cut off from the noise.
It’s surprisingly peaceful and calm, almost like stepping into a different world. When you hear “cigar bar,” you might imagine a dark, intimidating place with dim lights and heavy leather chairs where only cigar connoisseurs dare to enter. But this place isn’t like that at all. It’s casual and welcoming somewhere you can just drop by when you feel like taking a breather and relaxing with a cigar, no pressure.
Cuban cigars have gotten shockingly expensive lately (well, they were always a bit scary price wise), but here you can enjoy high quality cigars for a fraction of the price you’d pay at official shops. The only real difference is that they don’t have the signature ring band on them.
In the evenings, I like to sit on the terrace with friends, chatting over drinks in the breeze, while asking Peter, the cigar sommelier, for his recommendation of the day.
Talking with cheerful Peter is always a highlight. If you’re new to cigars, he’ll walk you through everything from the anatomy of a cigar and how to choose a good one, to how to light it, how to draw properly, and even which drinks and snacks pair best.
And when I’m relaxing on the sofa in the back, the owner’s beloved dog sometimes jumps up and curls up on my lap which honestly makes the experience even more heartwarming.
Inside the tall building at the back of the terrace, you’ll find a boutique and antique shop crammed with treasures : vintage Cuban memorabilia, glassware, stylish posters, accessories, and all sorts of cigar related items. I often set my half smoked cigar aside for a moment just to wander in and browse through this little treasure trove.
Since it’s far from the usual tourist spots in Havana’s old town and tucked away in a more local, everyday neighborhood, the place has this hidden gem quality. It feels like a secret only those in the know get to enjoy and I love that about it.
If a friend ever visits me from Japan, this is definitely one of the spots I’d want to show them and say, “Hey, check this out – isn’t it cool?”
